In a move that seems kind of obvious yet still comes out of nowhere, 2K has announced that they have signed on to publish NBA 2K Playgrounds 2.
NBA Playgrounds 2 was coming our way this year courtesy of the developers at Sabre Interactive. The first iteration of the game received mix reviews last year, and things appeared rocky on its sequel a few months ago. The game was poised to release on May 22nd before Sabre announced that it would be pushed back to an unknown date.
After the delay, fans reported that their preorders were being canceled at various outlets. This obviously didn’t bode well for the game. But Sabre simply stated that “Since the extent of NBA Playgrounds 2’s delay is unknown, we feel the right thing to do for our fans and players is refund pre-orders.” The company’s spokesperson then stated that the studio had “incredibly exciting news for the game,” and that they will “have more details to share soon.” Presumably that news was the addition of 2K as a publisher, leading to extended development time to bring another level of quality and polish to the upcoming title.
2K and Sabre both boast their excitement about their collaboration. Greg Thomas, President of Visual Concepts, said that “The original NBA Playgrounds was a fantastic throwback to the glory days of arcade-action sports. The new NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 will step up this energy and attitude big time – with a bit of added NBA 2K flair – giving fans of both franchises an exciting new way to game with friends around the world.”
Sabre’s CEO Matt Karch released a statement of his own stating that “No one is more committed to bringing fans a great basketball experience than 2K. We can’t wait to share more on how we’re teaming up to make NBA 2K Playgrounds 2’s incredible arcade action bigger and better than ever for players.”
Originally slated for a summer release, 2K confirms that NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch this fall. Just in time for the start of the 2018-2019 NBA season.
